Lasky/Israel Photo-Airbrush Masterworks

Before Photoshop, There Was Pure Imagination.

Long before digital editing, two visionaries—photographer Bob Lasky and artist Michael Israel—pushed the boundaries of what was possible. In the 1980s, armed only with film, airbrush, and fearless creativity, they blended photography, painting, and chemistry into something the world had never seen.

Each piece in the Lasky/Israel Collection is a marvel of analog innovation. It began with live models, often body-painted by hand, captured by Lasky’s Hasselblad on 120 film. From his darkroom, he produced large-format prints that became Israel’s canvas. With breathtaking precision, Michael layered airbrush color and emotion over each photograph—merging realism and fantasy into a living, breathing image.

But the process didn’t stop there. Lasky re-photographed the painted works, redeveloped them, and experimented with film chemistry to create surreal tones and dreamlike depth. Every step was hands-on, every effect achieved through mastery—not machines.

Exhibited publicly in the early 1990s and featured on television and in national magazines, these works captured the spirit of an era that dared to create without limits. Today, with Bob Lasky retired, only a handful of originals remain—a tangible bridge between photography and fine art history.
